Lean On Life Supports New Research that Finds Genes Linked to Childhood Obesity

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) April 10, 2013

Lean On Life, a leading healthy lifestyle website with the latest on weight loss, nutrition and fitness is putting its support behind a recent study that found genes linked to childhood obesity.

In the study, researchers found four genes that are associated with severe forms of childhood obesity. Some of the traits in these genes eliminate sections of DNA that maintain protein receptors, which help in weight regulation. Thus, individuals with these obesity genes are more susceptible to weight gain.

The study was conducted to determine any genetic links to obesity so that new drugs can be developed to treat this serious disease. Childhood obesity is rising at an alarming rate; globally, over 43 million children under the age of five are obese. That number is expected to rise to over 60 million by the end of the decade.

The new findings in this study can help open the door to a greater depth of research into childhood obesity, and ways in which to mitigate the disease. The researchers of the study believe that some genetic mutations can largely account for obesity in some children, while in others genetics can play just a small role.

Healthy lifestyle expert and Lean Life Coach Tal Brodsky believes that these findings are an excellent first step to tackling obesity on multiple fronts. He believes that scientific studies examining obesity help on two levels.

Firstly, this recent study puts us one step closer to developing more effective treatments for childhood obesity, Brodsky says. Moreover, these findings will also help bring obesity to the forefront, and encourage even more scientific research to help end childhood obesity.

Brodsky, along with the team of experts at Lean On Life, add that while genetics can certainly play a part in childhood obesity, they are not the sole factor. We must remember that a healthy lifestyle is still essential and our best known form of treatment to reducing rates of childhood obesity, Brodsky says.
